Chestnut Hill Rotary Supports Public Library

Chestnut Hill Rotary recently provided much-needed funding to the local public library for their after-school Build-It Club. The Chestnut Hill branch, which is part of the Free Library of Philadelphia, has been dealing with a myriad of issues, including a closure last November when the roof collapsed, and the boiler stopped working.

Phil Tankel (r), Chestnut Hill Rotary Community Service member, presents a check to the children’s librarian, Prather Egan.

The $2,000 grant funding awarded to the Library will be used to replace materials ruined by their roof collapse. The Build It Club helps children to be introduced to science, technology, engineering, and math building toys. The long-running and successful program has three main goals: collaboration, problem-solving, and learning to spend time using library facilities.

“The Chestnut Hill Library branch of the Free Library of Philadelphia (the oldest free library in America, thank you Mr. Franklin) continues to serve this community with not only books but also computer access and a vibrant after-school program for children,” said Phil Tankel, Chestnut Hill Rotary’s Community Service member.

Supporting education and literacy is one of seven areas of focus of Rotary International which has 1.4 million members, 34,000 clubs in 200 countries around the world.
