Chestnut Hill Rotary Supports Meals On Wheels

Chestnut Hill Rotary Community Service members, Frank Hollick and David Gary Smith recently presented a check for $1,000 to Chestnut Hill Meals on Wheels to purchase additional reusable insulated bags for food delivery to their clients. Chestnut Hill Meals on Wheels provides community seniors with healthy lunch and dinner meals delivered by caring volunteer drivers.

“For the past 18 months, we have shifted from disposable (plastic and paper) bags to reusable insulated bags for delivery," said Carey Davis, Executive Director. "Bags were provided in part by a Zero Waste grant from the City of Philadelphia Office of Sustainability and Chestnut Hill Rotary.” The city's agency works with partners to improve quality of life in all of Philadelphia neighborhoods by addressing environmental justice and reducing the carbon emissions.

After the initial purchase of bags, Meals on Wheels' client base grew. The organization delivers more than 33,000 meals a year to seniors and others with nutritional needs. The grant will fund an additional 250 bags. Members regularly volunteer to deliver meals and also provide hands-on service cleaning and maintaining the facility.
