Chestnut Hill Rotary Community Service Committee member Carol Bates recently presented a check for $1,000 to enable 50 students from 4th grade at Eleanor C. Emlen elementary school to visit science museums in Philadelphia.

Research has shown that in the traditional classroom setting, students often consume information passively, leading to reduced retention and a lack of genuine interest in the subject-matter. Science museums turn this approach on its head by promoting experiential learning – the process of acquiring knowledge through direct engagement with the subject.

"A big thank you to the Rotary Club of Chestnut Hill for your donation to help support science trips for Emlen students," said Tammy Thomas, Principal, Emlen Elementary School.

Chestnut Rotary has supported science teaching modules at Emlen, donated books for students to take home and regularly volunteered to mentor and provide hands-on service by cleaning and maintaining the school grounds.
