More than 250 people attended the Chestnut Hill Rotary Club’s most recent event, this year’s Lobsterfest fundraiser, on Sept. 21.

The Rotary Club of Chestnut Hill is partnering with Arcadia University to sponsor a civic education discussion Oct. 8 examining “Why Pennsylvania Matters Most in 2024.”

The nonpartisan forum will focus on Pennsylvania’s significance in this year’s presidential election. The free event will be at Arcadia and begins at 6:30 p.m. Registration is required. The Chestnut Hill Community Association and Mt. Airy CDC are among the event’s community partners.

Pennsylvania is an important battleground state that has voted for the winner in the last four presidential elections – although by extraordinarily narrow margins: for Donald Trump by 0.7 percentage points in 2016; and for Joe Biden by 1.2 points in 2020. Partisan control of the U.S. Senate could also hinge on the outcome of our state’s too-close-to-predict race.

The panel moderator is David Hawkings, a freelance journalist, communications consultant, and experienced congressional expert. He has been a guest commentator on Fox News, CNN, MSNBC, and NPR.

Participants in the discussion include:

Angelique Hinton, of Norristown, is the executive director of Pennsylvania Youth Vote, which she started in 2021 to improve civic engagement by young Pennsylvanians, especially from nonwhite communities.

Farah Jimenez, of Chestnut Hill, has been the executive director of the Philadelphia Education Fund for eight years and is a political analyst who’s regularly on 6abc.

Samuel Katz, of West Mt. Airy, is a historian, filmmaker and political analyst focused on Philadelphia. He was the Republican nominee for mayor in 1999 and 2003, and later ran for the GOP gubernatorial nomination, but has since affiliated as both a Democrat and an independent.

Amy Widestrom, of Elkins Park, is the executive director of the League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania. She took the post in January after serving as a political science professor at Arcadia University.
