Clams Steamed About Our Attention to Lobsters

This is the second in a series of fun, imaginative stories highlighting Chestnut Hill Rotary’s Lobster Fest.

Naturally, all the attention that the Chestnut Hill Rotary showers on Lobsters this time of year is going to generate a certain amount of petty jealousy.  We thought we could avoid it but the Mollusk Guild, if they had appendages, would be up in arms with our focus on lobsters.

“First, they lumped us together with crab meat.  Then the Forrest Gump movie got all that attention on shrimp.  Now you guys are starting to make a big thing about lobsters.  It makes us want to go into our shells and hide,” said Chet Cherrystone, head of the Mollusk Guild.

To be fair, humans keep confusing the issue by grouping anything that is in the water without a fin as shellfish.  But of course, it doesn’t take a marine biologist to tell you that a clam, a proud mollusk member, and a lobster, an esteemed crustacean critter, bear little resemblance to each other.

That didn’t stop the clam crowd from trying to shoehorn in on our Lobster Fest fun.  “Clams are really a lot of fun and, in fact, are often invited to Clam’s Casino night.  I personally like black jack, but the more sophisticated of our group like to play Baccarat.  Clams would make your casino night a hit if you want to do a different fund-raiser,” said Cherrystone.

Needless to say, we are not sailing toward that new direction anytime soon.  “For the 25th year, we will be holding Lobster Fest, Chestnut Hill’s premier food and fun event”, said Chestnut Hill Rotary spokesperson Jay Pennie. “This year’s Lobster Fest is September 21, and will be held again at the tree shaded, park-like atmosphere of 374 East Gowen Ave. There will be lobsters, corn, cole slaw, desserts galore, and a variety of beverages, both non-alcoholic and the adult kind.”

To reserve your spot at Lobsterfest, head over to chestnuthillrotary.org/lobster-fest and follow the prompts to reserve a spot for you, your family or a full table of friends.  Or if you prefer, you can write and send a check to Chestnut Hill Rotary Foundation, 200 Montgomery Avenue, Erdenheim, PA 19038.  Tickets are $85 each or $800 for a table of 10.

Elliot Schwartz, Rotary’s fantastic fund-raiser, is pushing for a separate future Oyster and Clamtastic event.  “Maybe we could get the Rockefeller Foundation as a sponsor,” said Schwartz.  He’s such an optimist!
