This year’s edition of March Madness was certainly filled with excitement and upsets. A number of our members had an emotional attachment to Mississippi state and flamed out early when the team could not move forward in the brackets. Then an early upset of Kentucky sent others to the sidelines.
Early leaders were Elliot Schwartz and his pack of grandchildren, who seemed to have the contest sewn up early. Dave Stoeffel hung around for the duration, but couldn’t get to the finish line with another emotional choice in Marquette as the winner.
Liz Price, a painting expert and basketball novice, showed surprising strength in the middle rounds of the tournament, at one point holding first, second and third place brackets. Then came the final four when Rob Williams and his brother Dick looked to be clearly ready for victory. Dick had Purdue and Rob had University of Connecticut as the champions. In the final, Rob secured a victory in our contest with an excellent performance by Connecticut.
Rob is a wonderful man who I’ve known for about 10 years. He has retired and moved to Hanover, New Hampshire. After telling him about his victory, he decided to share his winnings of $1,162 with our Chestnut Hill Rotary club and his own Hanover New Hampshire Rotary. Thanks, Rob and all of you for your wonderful support of this fun and engaging fundraising event!
Funds raised from donations and brackets raised $1,798 for Chestnut Hill Rotary’s charities that support not-for-profit organizations helping the community. If you would like to make a charitable contribution, visit our Donate page.
