Chestnut Hill Rotary Honors Member With Book Donation for School Library

Chestnut Hill Rotary posthumously honors long-time member Ned Mitinger, by donating books to the new library at Jenks Academy for the Arts and Sciences. Ned, and his wife Rujean, who both passed away last year, were most passionate about literacy and early childhood education. Both Ned and Rujean frequently volunteered to mentor at Jenks by reading to students who were struggling.

Maggie Stoeffel, Community Service Chair and Chestnut Hill Foundation President, showed the plaque to members at this week's meeting that will be given to Jenks at a ceremony to take place in the fall when students return to school. The plaque will adorn the wall of the school’s library.

Funds for purchasing the books topped $3,000 and were raised through club members and donations made in memory of Rujean Mitinger. Jenks officials will purchase the needed books over the summer.

Chestnut Hill Rotary also contributed funding last year with other groups to enable Jenks to reopen their library. Jenks is only one of a few dozen schools to have a library open in the School District of Philadelphia's 216 schools.
