Club meeting, December 21, 2016 – coaching for caregivers
Club meeting, December 21, 2016 – Yosaif August, “Say Yes to Life” Yosaif August had the club sing along with the Bill Withers song, Lean on Me: Lean on me, when you’re not strong And I’ll be your friend I will help you carry on For it won’t be long, till I am gonna need Someone to lean on Yosaif has extensive experience in working with caregivers, whose greatest challenges tend to be exhaustion and isolation. On the other hand, studies have shown that caregivers of stroke victims tend to live longer and have a lower rate of Alzheimer’s disease than the general population. He also recommended that people seeking to help others might do so in small “bites”, perhaps even in one-hour segments. He mentioned several websites for people looking to help others, and Yosaif emphasized that one should pay attention both to a person perceived to be in need and to the caretaker. He encouraged club members to join in a Declaration of Interdependence, where people in need of care acknowledge the areas where they need help and where they don’t want help. “Ask what I/we need right now rather than asking that I let you know when we need something. Ask me if I want advice or information before offering it to me.”
